Perry County High Point Trip Report

Found the topo map and DeLorme references to be misleading. Major and minor roads were mislabeled, etc. Following the instructions below will alleviate the extra time it took me to track down the county's two areas.

From Clanton, AL proceed 15 miles on H22 to Thomasville. Turn left at stop light for 0.2 miles. Right onto CR10 for 2.0 miles. Right onto H82 for 2.3 miles. Left onto H183 for 7.0 miles to Oakmulgee. Except for a crossroads sign, there is no other evidence of civilization. Turn left staying on the paved road all the way for 6.3 miles crossing Oakmulgee Creek at 0.5 mile and another single-lane bridge across a creek at 5.1 miles. The cohp is off to the left amidst the brambles and arbors. Deviating off the paved road which the references might lead you to believe is more expeditious will only delay finding the area.

For the second area, return to the non-existent Oakmulgee on H183 and turn right for 0.5 miles. Turn left onto a dirt road and at 0.8 miles bear left at the junction continuing another 2.3 miles (a total of 3.1 miles from H183) to the cohp. The highest point is slightly off to the left at the crest of the road. Back to the junction, the topo map indicates a better road going to the right and passing by a road allowing for a short backtrack to the cohp on another lesser road. This road is impassable for cars. Bearing left at the junction yields a very easily driven routing to the county highpoint.

Although you are not likely to find Bill Gates vacationing in these environs, if you're in to watermelon- seed-spitting contests, this is the place.
