Talladega County High Point Trip Report

This scenic ridge is southwest of Birmingham and southeast of Cheaha State Park, and has a gravel road that
takes you nearly to the summit.
From the intersection of AL21 and AL77 in south Talladega, go south on AL77 for ten miles to Porter Gap.
Turn right (west) on gravel road 600-1. This road is well graded and not too steep, however there are some
ruts and protruding rocks that will play havoc to all low-clearance vehicles. In several places I had to inch
my rental Neon along and did not make good time.
A high clearance SUV will coast along just fine on this road.
At mile 5.0, stop and walk the gated road on the right (west). This road ascends for a third of a mile to the
summit area which has picnic tables and an old outhouse. The lookout tower is used for telecommunications
so the lower steps have been removed.
The road 600-1 at Porter Gap can be reached from the east via AL77 and AL9 and is 12.7 miles to Ashland.
I took AL9 from exit 199 on I-20 and found it to be a good highway.
