Baxter County High Point Trip Report

On the drive east to Mountain Home I passed through the small town of Flippin AR.
Traffic was slow, and I though "boy, I'll be glad to get out of Flippin Arkansas".
I also pondered the life of a Flippin resident - born in the Flippin hospital,
attend the Flippin High School, and graduate to work in the Flippin Burger stand,
or perhaps the Flippin Fire department.
In any case, I headed on to Norfolk AR, where the topo maps show Martins Ferry
crossing the White River, followed by a long dirt-road drive to the county HP.
Here I got a lucky break - there was a new bridge and good paved road leading
all the way to BM 1325, a mile or 2 south of the HP. From here I headed north
on a dirt road to spot elevation 1371. From here a faint track led north 100
yards or so to a spot where fallen trees blocked further progress.
I took a nice short hike over to a 1400'+ area a bit to the NW.
There might be nice views from here when the leaves are down.
Went back to the car, and then headed east on the faint track. Made good progress
until the east line of section 11 was reached, where the track was gated and posted.
An unexpected surprise, as this land is all inside the Ozark National Forest boundary.
I headed east through a big overgrown meadow, with waist high grass.
From here you bear south to another 1,400' area. This one is horribly brushy,
and I beat a path to what might be the area HP, but it was impossible to be sure.
The largest 1400' area is south of here, and I noticed a hunting blind up a tree as
I got close to it. I started an anxious search for BM 1409, but the area had lots
of brush and trees. Finally I spotted a metal fence pole, and near it was a witness
mark that I believe reads "Sneed NO 1 1953". (I did not find the BM).
This proved to be the most interesting AR county HP, the terrain here has good relief,
and there is some nice forested country here. I beat my way back through the grass,
and raced the setting sun to the car.
