Woodruff County High Point Trip Report
on August NE quadrangle
Date: July 12, 2001
Author: Hans Haustein
To reach Woodruff County's Highpoints, take Arkansas State Highway 33 north from its intersection with
US 64 in Augusta. Follow Highway 33 for 9.1 miles north and east to County Road 187 and a sign for
Bernie Ladd Watermelon Farms, turn north on CR 187. Follow CR 187 north for 1.3 miles to the junction
with CR 165, stay on CR 187 and continue north, an unnamed cemetery is located just north of the
intersection with CR 165. Follow CR 187 for another 1.3 miles north until the road passes a house on the
left and turns east, continue for 0.2 miles to a pullout on the right side of the road. The first highpoint is
located 0.16 miles to the southeast of this pullout in a field. The field was not planted when I visited. There
are quite a few large rolling hills in the area. The material they are made of seems to be loess (wind blown
sediment), the same as Crowley's Ridge to the east. The high area is as shown on the quad sheet, i.e. falling
where the LAT LON show it to be.
The second area is reached by returning to the cemetery and CR 165 intersection and heading west for 1
mile to an unnamed dirt road, turn north and continue for 1.2 miles to a dirt pullout area. The second
highpoint area is located 0.14 miles to the east and is visible from the road. This highpoint was also in an
unplanted field when I visited. This highpoint is also as shown on the quad sheet.
A word of caution, the dirt roads were really soft and deep with the loess type soil. It had not rained for a
while when I visited, but it looks like the roads could get pretty muddy after a good rain. I couple of times
when I stopped to look at the GPS or map my tires spun in the soft soil when restarting. It reminded me of
driving in slush.
