Cochise County High Point Trip Report
Chiricahua Peak
Date: January 14, 2000
Author: Scott Surgent
Left home in Chandler at 4 am, heading out to the Chiricahua Mountains for a hike up
Chiricahua Peak. Storm two weeks ago dropped some snow, but roads were open and I drove
to the Rustler Park campground at 8,400 feet with no problem (some icy bits on the road up top).
Started hiking the crest trail to Chiricahua but encountered much snow.
Evidence of deer and smaller predator-type tracks (cat?) in snow, but no human tracks.
Put on snowshoes, hiked in about 1.5 miles, but the sidehilling grew tiresome and a
little tricky in places so... decided to abort this hike and try it again in more
hikable conditions. Hiked back to my truck. Now only 10 am.
