Coconino County High Point Trip Report
Humphreys Peak
Date: summer 1969
Author: Andy Martin
The first summer after getting my drivers license, I took a memorable
vacation to CA and OR. On the return (?) to Tucson we climbed Humphreys.
We started directly up the ski lift, and after it started we hopped on at
one of the towers. This mode of transport was considerably easier than
walking uphill. Twenty-two years later (August 16, 1991) I hiked it in a
more legitimate manner, up the trail from the ski lift.
September 4, 1999 update:
Stayed at Flagstaff the previous night;
sleeping at 7,000' is good for acclimation purposes. Great labor day weather,
and lots of other hikers on trail. I polled the groups we saw on the way down:
4 from Phoenix, 4 from Flagstaff, 1 Prescott, 1 Fresno CA, and 1 did not know.
On the way down we hiked over to the base of the ski lift. Starting here would
save a couple hundred feet of vertical gain on the way up.
