Coconino County High Point Trip Report
Humphreys Peak (12,633 ft)
Date: February 3, 2002
Author: Ken Akerman
This ascent was part of a winter mountaineering outing on the slopes of Humphreys Peak sponsored by the
Arizona Mountaineering Club. We arrived at the Arizona Snow Bowl parking lot on Saturday morning,
hiked along the trail for a while and set up camp in the snow. The following morning, we ascended to the
summit of the mountain, returned back to camp, broke camp and hiked back to our vehicles.
The San Francisco Peaks have been experiencing a warm and dry winter this season, which is not good for
the ski business but which makes it easier to complete a successful winter mountaineering ascent. Due to
very little snow, the Arizona Snow Bowl is currently closed and has been open for business only four days
thus far this winter. During our weekend of mountaineering, we had clear skies, light wind, and relatively
warm temperatures (highs in the 20's F), so this meant that all members of our team were able to ascend to
the summit without extreme difficulty.
