This is a drive-up for anyone with a high clearance vehicle. If you have only a standard passenger car, however, it is a loooooong walk up the road. However, one of the guide books I looked at mentioned a trail up from the north side, which was only about 5 miles, one way, to the summit. If you are unable to drive the road from the south, I would recommend that you investigate the possibility of this much shorter walk from the north. (Unfortunately, I don't recall in which guidebook I saw this reference.)
