Use one of the existing reports to get to the Tahoe Rim Trail and the saddle (or "col" in some reports) at 9680+ feet. At this point, you no longer need to worry about ignoring signs about rare plants. The signs are still there but there is also a USFS sign indicating "Freel Peak 1; hikers only" which will put you on a constructed (rocks moved, limbs cut) trail to the summit. According to a local hiker I talked to the next day, this was not there in 2004.
