San Benito County High Point Trip Report
San Benito Mountain

A dirt road leads high up the flank of San Benito Mtn, leaving only an easy 600'
vertical gain stroll up a side road to the top as described in Gary Suttle's book.
Because I personally required 1000' gain on this one, I hiked down a ridge on the
other side of the main road until my altimeter showed a 450' loss. Most of that
route was marked by bike trails, which scarred a hillside at one point.
Signs in the area warn of a hazard from asbestos dust from a naturally occurring deposit.
Because it had rained recently (parts of the road were still wet) and because research
has shown that the risk is insignificant unless the exposure is long term, I was not concerned.
