We started late in the morning (bad idea, too hot!) but had an opportunity to chat with several residents who were out and about. One old gentleman said he'd been up the mountain many times when he was younger and advised we should "go right up around the posted gate. Everyone does." We saw not another living soul until we returned to the houses and reported to the old gentleman and his good wife that we had returned safely.

I missed the trail from the radio towers on the East Rim down to the gully and ended up fighting my way through some brush, then doing the same up the other side to the West Rim. But did find the register on the stump as well as the trails down and back up. All's well that ends well, someone said.
