Ventura County High Point Trip Report
Mt Pinos (8,831 ft)
Date: June 6, 2001
Authors: Trapper Robbins & Roxanne Everett
A few updates on this near two-fer Ventura/Kern cohp:
- None of the campgrounds have water turned on this year.
- Signs indicate that a National Forest "Adventure Pass" is required for parking ($5/day, $30/year).
They are available at the ranger station in Lake of the Woods (1 mile from the Lakewood Valley Road junction).
- Elevations listed in Suttle's book appear wrong: From USGS maps, gain from gate to Mt Pinos summit is 500'
(not 800') and gain for the traverse over and back to Sawmill Mountain is 1000' (not 800').
- You can start at multiple places lower on the mountain and use bike/xc-ski/foot trails to extend this hike.
We started at McGill campground which adds 6 miles RT and 1000' gain to the trip.
