eastern approach (elevation gain 5,305 ft)

We parked at the trailhead near Hayden Creek Campground which is located approximately 4 miles southwest of Coaldale on Forest Road 6. We proceeded north on Forest Trail 1336, the Rainbow Trail, until its intersection with Forest Trail 1402. We turned left at Forest Trail 1402 and hiked up to Bushnell Lakes on the somewhat steep, but good, trail. Once at the lakes we traversed the first three lakes on the right and then crossed over to the slopes on the left just below the upper (and last) Bushnell Lake.

From here we scrambled up easy slopes to intersect with the ridge leading up to Bushnell Peak. A summit "stick" is easily visible as you top out on the ridge. Once on the summit ridge, walk over easy ground to the Fremont County High Point.

The ascent took us approximately 5 hours. The descent took us approximately 3 hours. An enjoyable, but strenuous hike to a highpoint with great views.
