Grand County High Point Trip Report
Pettingell Peak (13,553 ft)
Date: June 24, 2000
Author: Gary Swing
Eighteen people went on this Colorado Mountain Club hike to the highpoint of Grand County, planned by
John Mitchler and Dave Covill. There is a good trail from Interstate 70, [exit 218, west of Bakersville,
east of US 6/Loveland Pass,] to Herman Lake. The route above this was off-trail, with sections of grassy slope,
talus, soft snow, and loose scree. It was a fairly easy hike, for a high Colorado summit.
The scree was the worst part.
On the summit, I took a 13 pound watermelon out of my pack and shared it with everyone who wanted some.
We did a few short glissades on the way down.
