Las Animas County Highpoint Trip Report
West Spanish Peak (13,626 ft)
Date: July 17, 2008
Authors: SueAnn Miller and Frank Price
Previous reports are still good but we send a note that developer's gravel roads are often
better quality than the county road to Cordova Pass but the proper choice is signed at
each junction.
The trail has apparently been improved. It was always quite clear to timberline.
It winds through some nice Bristlecone on the windward side of the summit shoulder and
elderly spruce on the lee.
The scramble to the summit was described as "bouldering" in an earlier report but we
reserve that term for items larger than we are (e.g. Longs Peak boulder field
below the keyhole); and didn't consider the slag that complicates this steep ascent
and descent in the same category. The scenery made up for the attention required
for footwork on the upper reaches of this hike.
