Mesa County High Point Trip Report
Leon Peak
Date: July 5, 1997

I started from the Weir & Johnson Reservoir on the Delta county half of Grand Mesa,
a crowded campground on Fourth of July weekend. I followed a road or trail of inconsequential
ups and downs westwards to another road and then climbed up the second road to a narrow lake,
long in the cross-wise direction. I went left around it. That was miserable. The right side
has miserable boggy spots, but it is less miserable than the left side.
From the lake I bushwhacked and mosquito-whacked uphill. There are three steep pitches to climb,
separated by benches or flat areas. The top has a building and nice views.
On my return I took the "right-side" around the narrow lake.
The second road, which leads to the narrow lake, is a signed turn-off to "Twin Lakes"
at the main road and would probably make a better trailhead.
