Routt County High Point Trip Report
Mt Zirkel
Date: October 10, 2000
Author: Charlie Winger
The Slavonia trail head access has been reopened since the 1997 blow-down. It is scheduled to be closed
starting November 11, 2000 for extensive helicopter logging operations. I left the Slavonia trail head and
hiked up Forest Trail 1150, the Gold Creek Trail to its junction with the Red Dirt trail, Forest Trail 1142.
At this point Forest Trail 1150 goes right, downhill. I continued left on the Red Dirt trail to Red Dirt
Pass. At this point I turned left and hiked up and over the plateau to the three prominent rocky peaks and
on to the summit of Mt. Zirkel which is the third of the peaks. I was unable to find the register. Time
from trail head to summit was approximately 4 hours up and 2 hours down. Makes a nice day hike. Due
to an approaching storm I had to go back down below the Red Dirt junction and then hike back up to the
peak to finally get the HP. Made for a 20-something mile day of hiking.
