Dixie County High Point Trip Report

There are three areas in Dixie County shown as being higher than 75 feet elevation.
The Cross City East topographic map (1993 edition) shows these as being in the
Steinhatchee Wildlife Management Area.
However, the entire area except for the area around the Holly Hill Lookout Tower is
posted by the Ray Sawmill Hunting Club. This should be investigated; it may be an
unauthorized posting.
From the intersection of FL 351 with US 98/US19 in Cross City, take 351 north,
then northeast for about 5 miles to a dirt road going left (north).
There should be a sign here to Holly Hill Lookout Tower. Take this road for 2.2 miles,
then turn left and go to the parking area by the tower. The westernmost high area
can be reached by bushwhacking east, following the ridge line to a small fenced
radio tower (shown on the map as a black square), then continuing east to the obvious
high area.
The topo shows the section line as going right over the small 75-foot contour,
and there is an old fence, in a poor state of repair, that passes over this area.
The other two areas are about a mile and a half east-northeast of this point,
a short distance east-northeast of Buck Pond. I didn't attempt these.
