Holmes County Highpoint Trip Report
Date: March 14, 2007
Author: Michael Schwartz
This updates Fred Lobdell's 1999 report, which is still valid for the most part.
spot elevation 1 1/4 mile west of Leonia (323 ft)
For the northern area, Fred's directions are still good. Note that the
"...first left after crossing into Holmes County..." is Hummingbird Lane.
This is about 0.7 mile east of the county line. In very dry conditions I was able to
drive a sedan all the way to the gate at the county line. There is now a high
automatic gate with dire warnings, right at the crest. One could cross the
fence a few yards north at a lower gate but in my opinion the gate is at the
county line and the crest, which is adequate to claim the highpoint.
one small area 1/2 mile south of Green Pond (320+ ft)
For the southern area, exit Hummingbird Lane and continue straight across FL 185
onto a road which apparently has been slightly re-routed since 1999 and from
what shows on the topo. I followed the road southwest and bore right at a fork
where the paved road goes left and the dirt road goes right. I parked at the
crest at BM 312 (not found) and walked through open fields and track roads to
the highpoint. This was very straightforward and was never in view of any
dwelling, except for a distant view of a house from the actual highpoint.
