Jackson County Highpoint Trip Report
six areas (320+ ft)
Date: March 14, 2007
Author: Michael Schwartz
This updates Fred Lobdell's 1999 report and uses his numbering scheme.
For area 5, the "6th right turn" is Powder Circle. I found the gate (locked)
mentioned by Fred at just the right place but, after that, my impressions are
quite a bit different. A third opinion would be helpful. It's possible that in
seven plus years much has changed. Anyway, I walked in on the road about 0.2
mile to a large, deep sandpit gouged by many ATV and bike tracks. Bear left and
stay on the near side of the pit, following a sand road, and soon see a grassy
track in the distance that goes up a definite slope. Follow that almost to the
crest and let GPS take you to a very unimpressive bump in the field to the left,
about 500 feet distant.
For area 6, use Fred's directions to the unsigned dirt road that heads south
from Pike Pond Road. This is 0.87 mile west of US 231. Go south 0.35 mile,
turn right for 0.23 mile, turn left for less than 1/10 mile, and then see a
faint path angling left across a wide grassy area. This is about 200 feet
before a posted gate and entrance onto private property. I was able to drive
the path, bear left, and follow sand roads directly to the center of the large contour.
There were no postings and no houses visible from the center of the contour.
Wander around until satisfied.
