Bibb County Highpoint Trip Report
two areas (610 ft)
Date: July 10, 2007
Author: John Mitchler
Located in central Georgia, in and near Macon, these two areas are accessible
from interstates I-75 and I-475, and are located inside a gated apartment
complex and in the front yard of a rural home.
Area One is in Macon. Take Exit 164 (Hardeman Avenue) off I-75 (just south of
the split in I-16 and I-17) and drive northwest. At mile 1.0, come to a
junction of GA 247 and US41, but continue straight (northwest) on Vineville
Avenue (Business US 41). At mile 3.0 turn right (north) on Foresthill Road and
at mile 3.4 turn left (west) into the black iron gated community of Forest
Pointe apartment homes. Past the gate, drive another 0.1 mile to the Forest
Pointe visitor center with the high ground on your left next to the parking spaces.
Just before you turn into this gate, you should notice the Episcopal
Church complex which is the neighbor to new Forest Pointe. This complex is
shown on the topo map and likely contained the HP until the apartments were constructed.
You have two choices. You could park in the church lot and hop
the fence into Forest Pointe but that might be seen on the extensive video surveillance.
I chose to ask permission to enter Forest Pointe to obtain some literature,
during which it was easy to visit the high ground. These apartments
are very nice and their literature lists 50 reasons to live there,
of which #40 is "One of the highest points in Macon."
Area Two is west of Macon. Take Exit 162 (Eisenhower Parkway, US 80, GA 22) off
I-75, and drive west. At mile 4.1, pass under Exit 3 of I-475. At mile 6.2,
the parkway reduces from 4 lanes to 2. At mile 10.6 at the west side of Lizella,
turn right (west) onto Old Columbus Road. At mile 11.2, turn right
(northwest) on Hopewell Road and continue to mile 11.4 to house #8648 on the
left (southwest). The high ground appears to be along the road cut, in the yard, near a tree.
