Butts County Highpoint Trip Report

three areas along the western county line (820+ ft)
Date: January 4, 2007
Author: Bob Schwab
From Exit 205 on I-75, drive west on Route16 for 4.5 miles to High Falls Road on
your left. Turn left and drive east on High Falls Road for 1.5 miles (passing
Barnesville Road on your right) to where the main road angles to the southeast.
Continue straight (east) onto Bucksnort Road for another 0.8 mile to Bailey
Jester Road. Turn left here and drive north 0.4 mile to the Pine Ridge Sanitary
Landfill entrance. Turn right and drive a short distance east to the main gate
(the county line). Enter the gate, immediately turn right and drive up a short,
steep drive to a parking lot/truck turnaround at the top with a work trailer and
telephone pole perched on the northern rim. This is area 1, and while much of
the land around you has been significantly altered, this bump still seems to be
the original contour. The highest ground is near the telephone pole and trailer.
After your visit to area 1, drive the 0.5 mile back to the intersection of
Bailey Jester Road and Bucksnort Road. Continue south beyond this intersection
for 0.5 mile as the road bends east. At the county line, turn left and either
park here or drive north on a field path. Be sure to continue directly north.
Don’t veer toward the trailer or tower nearby. You will crest the hill at the
edge of a wheat(?) field but resist the temptation to stop and keep going north
for several hundred feet to visit area 2.
To visit area 3, return to Bucksnort Road and head east briefly until you
encounter Lee Jester Road (dirt). Turn right and drive 1.2 miles south
(becomes paved again near the houses) to High Falls Road. Make a hard right turn here
and continue northwest about 0.35 mile to mailbox # 1388, which is just beyond a
lawn surrounded by a chain link fence. Turn in at the mailbox and ask at the
trailer for permission to visit the top of the hill. They have several dogs
which will put up a mighty howl when you arrive, so don’t plan to stealth this one.
Tiny area 3 is almost directly under a power line right of way and
appeared to be near a block doghouse at the edge of the woods.
