Fannin County High Point Trip Report
Cowpen Mountain (4,151 ft)
Date: April 15, 2000
Author: Fred Lobdell
Ron Tagliapietra did a fine write-up of this summit, and the reader is referred to that report. I would add
that the large 4,120-foot contour, containing BM Cohutta at an elevation of 4,151 feet, is clearly
substantially higher than the small knoll to its north that is also marked by a 4,120-foot contour. Where
Ron bushwhacked steeply down to the east to regain the trail after summiting, we chose the longer but
gentler bushwhack by following the ridge south-southeast until we got to the trail. Total round trip hike is
about 2.5 miles, by the route chosen by either Ron or our party. This includes about 0.7 miles of relatively
easy bushwhacking. Elevation gain is about 650 feet.
