Gordon County Highpoint Trip Report

I followed Ken Oeser's report for Gordon County. I did not find FR 955 gated at
the intersection with FR 955B, although it could have been gated further up the road.
I turned left on 955B anyway and followed Ken's directions to the gravel
turnaround. Here, straight ahead as you enter the turnaround, is a gravel
parking space on the far side of the turnaround.
Ascending from this space is a trail of sorts, somewhat indistinct at times but
carrying all the way to the ridge of interest. Also carrying all the way to the
ridge was evidence of a fairly recent brush fire, apparently started from some
camp fires at the turnaround. The forest crown was untouched but much of the
underbrush had been burned away. Before the ridge is reached, there is a false summit,
a short distance before a shallow saddle. At a 20-foot contour interval,
this hill looks high enough to show on the topographic map but it doesn't.
I would guess it rises 40 or 50 feet above the surrounding terrain.
Once on the ridge, I turned right (east) and followed it uphill. I went to the
ridge crest and followed our time-honored tradition of walking down the ridge crest,
staying on the highest ground. This area, from the saddle up to the crest,
had not been burned but the bushwhacking was not difficult.
