Gwinnett County Highpoint Trip Report
Date: January 13, 2008
Author: Edward Earl
Gwinnett county has three possible HP areas, all near Bogan Road. I will refer
to these as #1, #2, and #3 in order from northeast to southwest. Area #1 has
spot elevation 1286. Any Martin's book lists four possible areas but this is
due to the fact that one crosses a quad boundary and he lists it separately on
each quad.
On I-985 a few miles northeast of Buford, I took exit 8 onto GA-347, which is
also Friendship Road. About 0.6 mile southeast of I-985 is Bogan Road on the right.
Zero or note your odometer here; all mileages in this report are on Bogan Road
(which later changes its name) going southwest from this point.
At 0.6 mile, cross the border from Hall to Gwinnett county. Bogan Road changes
its name to North Bogan Road at this point.
At 1.1 miles on the right is the turnoff to Bogan Meadows, which is a
residential neighborhood under construction at this writing. The cul-de-sac
road grid appears complete but the remainder of the area is just graded dirt on
which only a sales office and a couple of houses have been built. The turnoff
lies about 0.3 mile southwest of point 1286 where North Bogan Road turns left as
one heads southwest. I drove generally north on brand new roads, eventually
parking in a cul-de-sac several hundred feet northwest of point 1286.
I hiked toward the HP, initially in the open construction area, stepping over a
plastic anti-erosion construction fence, then entering open forest and crossing
the gully on the county line immediately northwest of the HP. I negotiated a
damaged barbed wire fence in the forest before arriving at the HP, a broad rock
slab rising a foot or two above the forest floor. A couple of houses could be
seen a few hundred feet to the southwest and I was careful not to come any
closer to these than necessary. There was no adverse signage. Access to area
#1 isn't really a problem at this writing but that could change very soon when
Bogan Meadows becomes developed.
At 1.3 miles on the left is an 8 foot high rockpile which is the HP of area #2.
It is in the front yard between two houses with addresses 3259 and 3253.
At 1.9 miles, cross Thompson Mill Road.
At 2.3 miles on the right is the large tan water tank at area #3. I drove up
the driveway and parked directly in front of the locked gate in the chain link
fence around the water tank. I walked around the right side of the fenced area
and mounted the HP of area #3, a small rock outcrop under the trees outside the fence.
For the benefit of those approaching from the southwest, the turnoff to Bogan
Park is at 2.6 miles. Cross Hamilton Mill Road at 3.0 miles.
