Jackson County High Point Trip Report
Date: November 23, 1999
Author: Fred Lobdell
The Jackson County HP is on Price Mountain, on the Hall County line.
The topographic map shows the county line as passing a few feet southeast of the bench mark.
The summit is now occupied by a house belonging to Mr. James Salter and family;
it appears that the house occupies the former summit, and may have obliterated the bench mark.
Two witness bench marks remain, and their arrows would intersect under the house.
Mr.Salter told me that those were the only two bench marks on the summit when he bought the place.
He said that the county line ran between them, putting the house entirely into Jackson County.
And he may be right; after all, he's the one who has to pay the property tax bill.
Anyway, I walked all around the house and stood on whatever high ground I could find.
The Salters have been in residence for about two months now.
To get there, exit I-85 at GA 53 and go south about a half mile to GA 124.
Turn left (east) on 124 and go 2 or 3 miles to GA 60. Turn left (northwest)
on 60 and go about 4.5 miles to Price Mountain Rd. on your left (southwest).
[This is the last left turn before the Hall county line, so if you get to the county line
turn around and go back a few hundred feet.] There is a green sign with white lettering that says,
"Price Mt Rd" and above that a yellow sign that says, "Private". But it is not posted.
The road is a new one-lane asphalt road that climbs up over an elevation of 1,180 as
it goes northwest parallel to GA 60, then turns left and drops down to cross a
small creek at about 1,020 feet before climbing to the summit of Price Mtn. and ending in
the Salters' front yard. It is not shown on the topo. Ring the bell and ask whoever
answers for permission to walk around the house. The two existing bench marks are in the back yard.
