Monument Road now intersects highway 136 a couple miles east of its former location. It still ends just
before Mt. Oglethorpe, though. A couple was returning from their hike and told us that they had hiked to
the summit hundreds of times and had never seen the cameras that the sign warns people about.
However, it took some time before we realized that start of the road was not the road shown on the map.
We could not access Burnt Mountain from this road and followed 136 west to the old road. There was a
gate here but cars had gone around the gate on the left side. We did this but it would not have been difficult
to park at the gate and hike the 1.3 miles to the summit (one way). We parked at the second gate about 0.5
mile from the summit and hiked from there. The ruins at the summit are impressive.
