Author: Mark Ness
Sioux County's 3 high point areas are located in Section 2 of Settlers Township
and Section 10 of Welcome Township.
From the intersection of State Highways 9 and 182, 1.5 miles south of Larchwood,
I drove south on S.H. 182 for 9 miles to the junction with U.S. Highway 18 at the south edge of Inwood,
then I continuted straight on U.S. 18 south for 2 more miles, and turned right onto County Road A50.
I drove west on A50 for 1.7 miles and turned left onto Buchanan Ave.
I drove south on Buchanan for 1 mile and turned right onto 270th St.
I drove west on 270th St. for 0.66 mile and parked in an approach,
0.27 mile straight line distance from the top of area 1.
areas 1 and 2
I walked through the field to area 1 in 6 minutes, walked around this larger area,
and in about 6 more minutes arrived at area 2.
Just west of area 2, the elevation drops off fast, an unnamed tributary to the Big Sioux River.
From my parking spot, I turned around, getting back onto U.S. 18 going south.
6 miles past Rock Valley, U.S. 18 curves south again. 1 mile past the curve,
it curves again to the east, but U.S. 75 continues south.
I drove south on U.S. 75 for 2 miles, and turned left onto 340th St.
I drove east on 340th St. for 1 mile, and turned right onto Harrison Ave.
I drove south on Harrison for 0.39 mile and parked in an approach 400 feet from the top.
There was a barking dog at the nearby farmplace.
area 3
I arrived at the top of area 3 in about 3 minutes, a typical field hill.
