Custer County High Point Trip Report

Borah Peak

Date: September 14, 2002

We drove in from Salt Lake, arriving in the afternoon and setting up camp right at the trailhead. We met John Mueller and his buddy Russ coming off the mountain. John was #66 state completer some years ago, and he is working on his second round right now (he's been to the top of Denali twice). Russ still has 3 states to go on his first round of state completions (Montana, Alaska, Oregon).

We started up the trail at 5 AM Saturday, and summited at 8:20 AM. We spent forty minutes on top, enjoying the spectacular views since the day was crystal clear. We started down at 9 AM, arriving back at the trailhead at 10:40 AM. I have to say that the technicality of this peak is overrated, as I never had to down-climb any technical sections at Chickenout Ridge - we just skirted around them. The overall grade of the trail is very steep, however, with a 5000-foot climb in just 3.5 miles.

In summary, 3 hours 20 minutes up, 1 hour 40 minutes down, a great day in the Lost River Range.

We drove home through Craters of the Moon National Monument. Really cool place!
