Drive: From Idaho state route 75 between Stanley and Galena Summit, take the signed road to the Pettit
Lake trailhead. Note that a trailhead parking permit is required.
Hike: We took the well-signed trail to Alice Lake (roughly 6 miles, 1600' gain). Lovely camping here.
Next morning, we continued up the trail to the pass between Twin Lakes and Toxaway Lake. Here, we
headed up the east ridge of the peak, staying slightly south of its crest, until we reached the main north/south
crest line. We turned right, and followed on or near the crest until just short of the summit, where we
detoured around a blocky bit down to the west about 100 feet and headed back up to the top. There is some
easy class 3 work on this route, and a lot of steep loose crud. Round trip from Alice Lake is roughly 6 miles
and 2000' gain.
[Our detour to the west just before the summit could be avoided if you don't mind a fairly narrow, somewhat
exposed ridge for 60 or 80 feet. Some of us didn't want to do it.]
