I followed Ken Jones' very detailed directions, and had no problems.

I made this side trip on the way up to Mountain Home AFB and it ended up taking a good deal longer than I expected. The roads are pretty good, given the dirt nature of them, and I believe a passenger car could make the voyage, but it would take a couple hours for the road trip. The round trip driving time from the interstate was just less than 3 hours.

You can see forever and there is no sign of human interference from the top of Bear Den Butte. What a quiet, lonely, beautiful place with lava flows and rattlers as your only companions.
