Set in the flat fields of east-central IL, this county's highpoints are strung out from Westfield on the Clark County line to I-57 near Mattoon. The eastern ones are distinct and relatively high and the western ones are broad, boring, and flat. We were glad to have Tim Worth's report. When doing areas #1 & #2, be sure to bop into nearby Westfield, the HP of Clark County. We spoke to Steve Schrader, the owner of area #4 who thought the true HP was marked along 2300N, just north of 500N. We agreed with Tim's "flattest" comment about area #5. Hand-leveling is near useless in area #5. When traversing Coles County to do these highpoints, you may wish to detour south to visit Cumberland's highpoint as well as Lincoln Log Cabin Historic Site. Charleston was the site of some unusual Civil War activity as described at the courthouse.
