Greene County High Point Trip Report

This highpoint has a commanding 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside. It is one of the most scenic Illinois highpoints - very pretty, and definitely worth doing.

From the intersection of IL 109 and US 67 in Carrollton, head south on US 67 2 3/4 miles to County Road 1000N CAUTION: The Delorme edition labels the highway heading south from Carrollton as IL 267. Illinois swapped route numbers about a year ago, and what is shown on older maps as IL 267 is now labeled US 67, while US 67 (to the east) is IL 267. This applies to the section of road between Jacksonville and Alton. Head west on CR 1000N for approximately 3.5 miles to CR 800E. Turn left (south) on 800E. Go one mile south to the farmhouse of Cy Giberson, and ask permission to drive to the water tower (not on topo) just east of the highest ground.

The road to the towers is the second road to the north of Mr. Giberson's house (neither are on the topo). The first goes to the pond shown on the topo. The second, a rough gravel road, goes to a gate, which is not locked. A truck can drive all the way to the tower, I parked at the gate and walked. The high point is in a field just west of the water tower, planted in corn this year.
