Newton County High Point Trip Report
Date: June 10, 2001

These areas are quite close to the high points in Jasper county, so you may want to visit both when you are
in the area. Follow the same directions for getting to the Jasper county high points. From the farm on 1900
S Road, continue west for 0.7 mile to an intersection with a road that goes directly south (300 E Road in
Benton county). Across the street from this intersection (on the north side) is a sign that indicates this is the
intersection of 1800 S Road and 650 E Road in Newton county. You have arrived at the county tri-point,
and apparently each county uses different numbers to designate the same road (remember this road was
1900 S Road in Jasper county).
Area 1 is fairly large and irregularly shaped and extends quite far out into the field in a northwesterly
direction from this point. There is obvious higher ground some distance out into the field, which I spent a
lot of time trying to pinpoint. There are also two much smaller spots out in this same field to the west (areas
2 and 3, going from east to west), but neither achieves the same elevation as area 1. After I thought I had
found the high spot in area 1, I drove west another 0.4 mile to another obvious rise in the terrain
immediately to the right of the road (area 4). This area impressed me that it might be even higher than
anything in area 1. Continuing west on the road another 0.2 mile, you pass an intersection (550 E Road) and
encounter another spot on the northern side of the road just a short distance beyond the intersection (area 5).
This area was obviously lower than area 4. The last area to investigate is almost exactly 2 miles further
west on 1800 S Road. .Area 6 is very close to a half-dead tree just west of some farm buildings (the house is
gone) which are a few hundred feet north of the road.
As you visit these areas, you will frequently notice higher ground on the south side of this road, but that side
is Benton County. To exit this area, continue west on 1800 S Road for 0.5 mile and you will arrive at an
intersection with Indiana 55.
