Bath County Highpoint Trip Report
Tater Knob (1,388 ft) and one spot on Big Mtn 1.4 miles southwest of South Knob (1,380+ ft)
Date: May 30, 2004
Author: Ken Oeser
I had previously visited Tater Knob (see previous write-up) but we returned for Annette and Alexandra.
This fire tower was a great birding spot, with many visible in the treetops from the short tower.
We then drove west on the Zilpo Road to KY211, then south to KY36 and turned right. After about a mile
(didn't write distances on this one!), we turned left onto Pine Grove Road and drove west about 4 - 4.5 miles
to the hollow that goes north to the west side of the small contour and South Knob. In rain, we talked to a
neighbor just east of this hollow who said the owner of the hollow wouldn't mind if we parked by the road
and hiked in. We donned raincoats and hiked north along a faint road about 0.5 mile and started hiking
northeast up a ridge which led us right to the highpoint, a nice bump at the top of the ridge.
GPS helped verify direction down in the hollow and the ridge to the top. We found a snake skeleton about
halfway up. We hiked down the same route.
South Mountain was ignored because elevation 1,384 is 4 feet lower than Tater Knob's 1,388 feet.
