Jefferson County High Point Trip Report
Date: February 14, 2004
Author: Ken Oeser
We talked to a landowner for access, and he told us it had been mined away about
3 years ago along with the markers. He remembered another family from a few
years back (the Jones?). He gave us permission to hike up anyway, so we did.
We followed an old road to the ridge at the 890+ contour just north of the 900
contour area, and sure enough, the old cohp is gone, dug away likely 50 feet or
more by the brick company that has bought most of the mountaintops.
At least some people made it to the lone spot before it was mined away.
We knew we had an 890+ ft contour, so left hoping there weren't others.
Alas, looking at the computer this morning there are 2 others in South Park Hills,
one is a quarter mile north and the other a half mile north of the southernmost area.
We now have a partial completion for Jefferson, but will have to return for the others.
I don't know if there are other 890-foot contours in the county,
but will now have to look before our return trip.
