Stuffley Knob (1,508 ft in DeLorme)
From the Magoffin/Johnson county line on Highway 460, go east
1.6 miles to the crest of the road and park where a dirt road heads south into the woods. There is a gate,
but is was open when we were there, and a 4WD could probably make it to the top about 0.5 mile south.
We parked on the side of the highway and hiked up the road, which follows a steep hollow to the top of the knob.
There are three towers on top, but a fire tower marks the highest spot.
one area 7/8 mile south of Collins Cemetery (1,480+ ft)
From the junction of KY114/KY1427 just east of the
Magoffin/Floyd county line, drive east on KY1427 2.4 miles to the road crest and park on the south side of
the road in a dirt parking area. We asked at the house across the road, but the man there doesn't own the
ridge to the north, and he thought it would be OK to walk up after we explained our intentions. From the
parking area, cross the road to a dirt road heading north for about 300 feet to its end, mark your altimeter,
and bushwhack left uphill to the ridge top. Use a topo and follow the ridge 0.5 mile until it curves west,
then follow it to a high area about 0.25 mile west. The ridge curves northwest after this point. This area is
in woods next to a 4WD track that begins about halfway along the ridge. There is no sign of the Jenny
Wiley Trail shown on the map, and the man in the house didn't know what it was. I believe this area has
little gain to it, far less than the 28 feet of gain within the contour on Stuffley Knob, so it isn't necessary to
get this one to claim the county, in my opinion.
