Androscoggin County High Point Trip Report
Shackley Hill (1,122 ft)
Date: September 10, 2000
Author: Mike Schwartz
From the junction of ME 4 and ME 108 in Livermore, opposite spot elevation
412 on topo, go northwest
on ME 108. Bear right at 0.4 miles, and turn right at 1.6 miles onto
Shackley Hill Road, which dead ends
at a house and other structures. The property is owned by John Castonguay
Sr. and Jr., tel: 207-897-
5945. There are two massive, loose, rotweilers guarding the property, so
advance notice is a good idea. I
was fortunate to find John, Jr., on the property, and he had no problem with
my hiking to the summit. He
knew the exact elevation of Shackley Hill, but thought that nearby Bear
Mountain was the county high
point. I told him that Bear Mountain was probably in Oxford County (it is)
and promised to send him a
note and a copy of the map after I returned home. From the house, a good
skid road goes to the summit,
which has no views, but there is a good view from an outcrop just short of
the top.
