Baraga County High Point Trip Report

The trip from Wisconsin to upper Michigan is absolutely beautiful. There are camping areas and lodges everywhere. I spent the night right on the Wisconsin/Michigan border at Land O Lakes. I spent the night in a beautiful little cabin at Pineaire Resorts, which I highly recommend for $40 per night (a double bed and single bed included). Dinner that night was at the Gateway Lodge, which I also highly recommend. Gourmet dining at very reasonable prices. Wish I had been there on Friday night for their all-you-can-eat fish fry for $5.79.

The highlight of the trip, without question, was Mt. Arvon, Michigan. The scenery is fabulous. One trip report that I reviewed suggested stopping for the famous sweet rolls at the Hilltop Cafe. Fortunately, I arrived there in time for their buffet breakfast, which includes the sweet rolls, and I highly recommend. The town of L'Anse is postcard picturesque, right on the bay of Lake Superior.

Now concerning Mt. Arvon. Don Holmes, and virtually every trip report writer, describes how difficult this site is to find, with changing logging trails, etc. As recommended, I stopped in at the Information Kiosk in L'Anse to get their VERY detailed directions. Let me simply say this: forget ALL of this. We kept trying to find each little fork mentioned in the directions, and they are simply not accurate. Once you get to the logging trail, just stay on the main road until you hit the clear T, then as directed, turn right (a sign clearly marks the way), and follow the signs to the parking spot for the climb. An easy 1/2 mile walk.
