Gogebic County High Point Trip Report
Date: December 31, 2000
Author: John Mitchler
In the State of U.P., just across the border from Wisconsin, this northwoods hill is along a road in Ottawa
National Forest.
From the WI 17 2.4 miles east of Phelps, Wisconsin, take Bootleg Road 3.4 miles north to the Michigan-
Wisconsin border, passing the Vilas Co. highpoint areas at mile 1.7 and 1.9. Just before you reach the
state border, watch for nice lanes into the forest on your left which are not on the topo. The state border is
marked by a small yellow survey marker sign tacked to a tree on the left side of the road. Just 500 feet
from the border, watch the land rise a bit on the right (east). A modern cabin is located on the south end
of the wooded hilltop and the highest area appears to be a bit north of the cabin. The road appears to be
FR 321 and was not well plowed. We used snowshoes even though the area was only 50 yards off the road.
Hot tip: the accent is on the second syllable of Go-ge-bic.
