Greene County High Point Trip Report

The cohp is located as follows: From "downtown" Sand Hill, MS's stop sign on MS Hwy. 63, go N on
that highway 5.0 mi. to Virgil Lane, onto which you'll turn L or west. Go about a quarter mile on this
gravel road. You'll see yellow Nat'l Forest signs on the right when you enter public land. There's a good
place to park just up ahead on the right, where the road makes a sharp left curve. Using the topo., walk N
a few hundred yards before turning west, thereby staying out of the privately-held pasture that occupies
the area SE of the hp. Enroute, you'll descend with, then cross westward, a N-flowing intermittent forest
stream, before beginning the uphill walk. After turning west, about 500 yards and about 75' of elevation
gain puts you at an obvious hill top, at a fence line -- woods sparse here, sandy, with some prickly-pear
cactus underfoot. This is the cohp.
The similarly-elevated pasture area (presently planted in ~2-year old pine saplings) seen off to the west-
southwest does not rise to the 380' contour, and need not be privately-accessed. The property owner at
Virgil Lane's end, who was busy loading heavy equipment on a flat-bed, was nice enough to point out the
public land route described above, avoiding his land's use, which would only minimally abbreviate the
walk anyway.
