Lamar County High Point Trip Report

first ascent
From the I-59/US 49 intersection on the north side of Hattiesburg, MS, travel N on US 49 about 6 mi.
Turn W onto MS Hwy. 42, and go ~13.3 mi. The cohp is in the rolling fields to the NE of the highway,
visible. (You may find it easier to proceed up the highway to the county line, turn around at the nearby
store, and back-track 0.6 mi.) Mrs. Lucas, rural mailbox #80 on the NE side of the highway, was very
nice in allowing me to park in her driveway and walk the few hundred feet uphill across the field. She
was quite aware that her hill was the county's hp. Just beyond, to the N, is the 47 mi.-long Longleaf
Trace, a completed and paved rails-to-trails bike-way, indicated as a RR on the topo.
