Lawrence County High Point Trip Report
8 candidate areas
Date: August 4, 2002
Authors: Fred Dale and Brian Dale
Use the town of New Hebron in the northeast corner of the county as a base. The northernmost (section 9)
of the areas is listed last in Andy Martin's book. From New Hebron, go northwest on Highway 42 about 2
miles to the cemetery indicated on the map (link below) at the county line. I felt the highest ground there to
be within the cemetery, near the southeast corner, and/or west-central.

The next hp candidate group is one mile south of the above candidate. On the west side of New Hebron find
the high school. Go south a couple of blocks and turn west, leaving town. Don't take the major route
southwest; rather stay on the smaller road west. Go about 2 1/2 miles, angling off northwest at the
intersection within the first mile. Five candidate hps are found close to the road, near the four-corners of
sections 16, 17, 20 and 21 as indicated on the topo. They are referenced here by number, # 1 - 5, sequenced
east to west. #1 is barely discernible in the pasture as a summit. Otherwise, the remaining four at this
location are easier to identify by sight and feel for the topography, and of course by GPS. #2 requires a
short walk into the woods to the old power line strip. #5 requires a short walk into the pasture.

Now go west 200 yards or so and turn southeast at the hairpin intersection. Go about 1 1/2 miles to the
next intersection and turn left (east). Just a couple of hundred feet up ahead, the section 28 hp candidate
area is on either side of the road in front of an abandoned old home, which itself is on the south side next to
an occupied house.

For the eighth candidate hp, go back west just past the water tank and turn south onto Powell Road.
Go about one mile to the tiny section 33/34 hp. The road's topography will signal the correct place to park for a
quick visit into the woods on the east side. Be careful of two things: downed rusty barbed wire on the ground;
and apparently there is an older roadbed in there at a fence line. This abandoned curve might be the
road indicated on the map, so do examine the ground across the fence to be sure of getting the hp.
