Rankin County Highpoint Trip Report
four areas (610+ ft)
Date: April 10, 2004
Author: Bob Martin
There are three areas near a lookout tower and one at a communications facility. From I20 exit 68, drive south
on the Shiloh-Brandon Road. Reach the village of Shiloh, where there is a church, and a half mile farther
come to the Shiloh Lookout Tower on the left.
I had been to these areas the year before, but wasn't sure enough of the situation at the southern one in the
gathering darkness to want to count it as done.
Three of the areas are within the 600-foot contour along with the lookout tower but the tower is not on one
of them. One is north of the main road just before the entry to the tower, and the other two are south of the
tower along the road.
The road south of the tower does not go over the 612 BM as depicted on the topo but goes east of it.
There is now a high prison-type fence with locked gate surrounding a tall communications tower. The high ground
around the fence appears to be as high as anything within the fence, with the exception of a small grassy
mound east of the tower, which appears to be man-made. A small, skinny person could squeeze under the
fence at a place on the east side but otherwise the tower appears to be well guarded.
