Stone County High Point Trip Report

4 unnamed locations in two adjoining sections (370+ ft)

Date: December 14, 2000
Author: Fred Dale

From the Wiggins, MS intersection of US Hwy. 49 & State Hwy. 26, go west on the latter 11 miles to Magnolia Rd. (signed), better noticed by the highway sign indicating "[arrow] Silver Run". Park near the intersection.

Section 19

(30 deg 51.54' N, 89 deg 20.10' W) and (30 deg 51.56' N, 89 deg 20.29' W)
Topo chart, midway in-between

Back-track, or walk back from the intersection a few hundred feet to the pleasant and partially-fenced field on the north side of the highway. Walk across to the NE corner to the old cemetery; you'll traverse the smallest of the 370+ ft locations. Crawl under the fence and walk west across the pasture a quarter mile, crossing a second fence just past a topographic low, to the pasture's high ground, the second hp locale (an old lookout tower site, it turns out). (This one could easily be reached from Magnolia Rd., instead.)

Section 30 - two areas

(30 deg 50.45' N, 89 deg 20.11' W) and (30 deg 50.55' N, 89 deg 19.99' W)
Topo chart, mid in-between

For these two locations, get back in the vehicle and go south on Magnolia Rd. ~1.2 mi. As you approach the top of the gentle hill on the road, look for the small power line taking off on its own cleared right-of-way into the woods on the right (W). Cross the fence very carefully, and walk a few hundred feet up into the 370+ ft contour to the larger power transmission line ROW. I thought the highest ground to be just south within this large cleared ROW, or perhaps just ahead west of the intersection of the two lines. Go back to the road, cross it, again carefully on the serious barbed wire, and take a mild bushwhack east and northeast a couple o' few hundred feet to the highest looking ground in this wooded contour. I thought it to be near a large pecan tree with a deer-hunter's tree stand in it.

Especially with the last spot, be aware of deer season. Choosing a blustery rainy weekday helped me in this regard.

Hand-leveling was not of much use. According to DeLorme's TopoUSA, the third area cited is the highest (at 375 ft); it is the larger of the 4 areas.
