Silver Bow County High Point Trip Report
Table Mountain (10,223 ft)
Date: July 19, 2003
Author: Tim Worth
Approach is from the Highland Lookout. To get there from Butte, take MT 2 south out of town to FR 84
(Moose Creek Road). Take this for 8.8 miles to a marked intersection indicating a left turn for Highland Lookout.
From there, go 1.3 miles to an unmarked intersection, again turn left. Go another 1.5 miles to
another unmarked intersection and turn right. This road leads to the lookout. It is a 4WD road which will
test the sturdiness of your passenger car. Don't ask how I got mine up there.
From the lookout tower I climbed Red Mountain, then followed the ridge south to UN 10136,
down to a saddle, then southeast up to Table Mountain.
The original lookout tower was on the summit of Red Mountain, but had been blasted apart by lighting
decades ago. UN 10136 is the most impressive peak in the area, but is 86 feet lower than Table Mountain
and just over the line into Madison County. The summit of Table Mountain is 100 acres in size and has a
cairn, register, and solar antenna.
Trip statistics: 6.5 miles with 1,520 feet of elevation gain.
