Fort McHenry National Monument Highpoint Trip Report
spot elevation (31 feet)
Date: March 22, 2009
Author: Fred Lobdell
The approach to this historical landmark is not especially well marked.
Take I-95 into the city of Baltimore and get off at Exit 55,
just south of the Fort McHenry tunnel. This should put you on Key Highway.
Take this to Lawrence Street and turn left. Turn left again on Fort Avenue
which leads directly into the NM.
The fort itself is surrounded by earthen ramparts and a wooden fence,
none of which looks natural. From the northwest the ground slopes up
gently toward the fort, and my best guess for the highest natural ground
would be a short distance northwest of the fence surrounding the fort.
Wander around until satisfied.
There is no entry fee for the national monument grounds,
but there is if you want to visit the fort itself.
