Haleakala National Park High Point Trip Report
Haleakala Puu Ulaula - "Red Hill" (10,023 ft)
Date: March 19, 2002
Author: Dick Ellsworth
Ron Tagliapietra's report is accurate. I noticed many groups of 15-20 cyclists riding down followed by vans
(another tourist activity) as I drove up to the summit area. I walked around the parking rim also. On the
way down, I stopped at the upper visitor's center and walked up White Hill for a great view down into the crater.
A really cool thing to do would be to watch the sunrise from the top and walk the (about 19 mile) trail
down to the beach for the sunset. Goes through a breach in the crater (some "Gap" - I forget the name now).
