Durham County High Point Trip Report
Red Mtn (770+ ft)
Date: October 5, 1996
Author: Fred Lobdell
There is a radio tower on the northern (highest) knoll of Red Mountain, but it is north of the county line in
Person County. Durham County's HP is somewhere along a north-northwest to south-southeast trending ridge.
The area is being built up and access, already difficult, will probably become more so.
From the traffic light in the hamlet of Rougemont at the intersection of US 501 and Red Mountain Road,
proceed east on Red Mountain Road for 0.8 mile. Turn left (north) on Quarterhorse Run and climb the
mountain to a cul-de-sac at 1.0 mile from Red Mountain Road. Park a little down the road from the dead end.
The ridge containing the HP is on the east side of the road.
The woods are posted here but if you were able to walk into them, you would find a ridge running about a
quarter mile with several rock outcrops along it. You would need to visit all of them to be sure of having
attained the highest point. No bench mark is in evidence. The ridge runs behind several houses,
with the bulk of it being north of the northernmost house on Quarterhorse Run.
