Polk County Highpoint Trip Report

I went via Roy Wallen’s SW approach and directions to the top. I think the
overgrown road he mentions is off of the Mills Mountain main road. It may be
the only unnamed road to the north without a mailbox and passes a gazebo and
picnic table but I did not go back and drive it. It was not too overgrown and
though narrow in a few spots I would have felt safe taking my truck all the way
up to the foundations but it was a great hike anyway. The paths to and from
this road are well worn. I saw no other cars this morning and most houses
appear to be summer or weekend homes.
My back up plan was the south side. In the 2007 NC game lands book it shows a
diamond shape patch of state land touching the summit and south east side and
down to 1190 off Skyuka Road. I did not see any boundary markers on top and
from above it looks like most of area is steep rocky cliffs. There is some game
land to the north and a signed parking area but ownership does not continue to
the summit.
